The masters of the stone mill
Our special stone mills have been produced for generations by especially trained master stonecutters. Delicate indentations transport the ground tea outwards and are only a few millimetres deep and these furrows have to be very carefully engraved by hand.
Additionally they have to become deeper the closer they get to the middle of the stone mill to such an extent that they are almost invisible to the naked eye.
The key to success lies in years of experience, the right feeling for the stone itself and a passion for details. For more than 120 years – equivalent to time AIYA has been in existence– these traditional techniques of manufacturing Matcha stone mills have been kept and preserved at AIYA while elsewhere they have largely been lost.
